Speaker Shares Inspirational Story with Students, Staff

Mars Area High School welcomed inspirational speaker Eric McElvenny as part of a Wellness Wednesday assembly, offered through the school’s Mind Matters Club.

A Marine Corps veteran and Paralympian, McElvenny lost the bottom half of his right leg after stepping on an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) while on a mission in Afghanistan. Despite his loss, McElvenny went on to complete eighth Ironman Triathlons, including the World Championships, and he represented Team USA at both the 2020 and 2024 Paralympic Games.

McElvenny shared his story of perseverance and how he was able to overcome challenges and unlock his full potential. And, he spoke with student about setting goals and remaining consistent.

During the In-Service Day on Oct. 12, McElvenny presented his story to District teachers and staff members. He also met with Mars Area Centennial School fifth-grader John Clark, who, in November 2023, underwent two open-heart surgeries, a heart transplant and a partial leg amputation.

Clark’s father, Jarrod, an advocate for disability rights and healthcare access, recounted his son’s own story of survival and resilience. Following the talk, Mars Area School District presented the Clark Family with a donation of monies collected through dress-down days for District staff members.

Funding for the Eric McElvenny presentation was provided through Mars Planet Foundation. For more information, visit Learn more about Eric McElvenny.
