Mars Area School Board unanimously approved plans to replace the Mars Area High School tennis courts at a cost of $550,000.
The project will include five new courts, which will be built in the same location as the school’s current tennis courts. Electrical service will be included in the project to enable the District to add lighting in the future, if needed.
“Everything will be run and ready and there will be outlets (in place),” said Dr. Mark Gross, superintendent, adding that, for the high school athletics program to continue, the tennis teams have never really needed lights, given that the team’s matches and practices take place immediately after school.
Construction is expected to begin in late-April upon the conclusion of the spring boys tennis season. For more information, call (724) 625-1518 or visit https://4.files.edl.io/fd11/01/15/25/154908-7b890bd6-f70e-4452-afa8-5e7def9a8e9e.pdf.
Board Reviews Options for Tennis Court Project (01.15.25)
Mars Area School Board is considering options for replacing the aging tennis courts at Mars Area High School.
The District could build a facility with either four or five individual courts, says Mark Scheller of DRAW Collective. However, in conversations with the school’s tennis coaches, the preferred option would be for five courts.
The new tennis courts would be located in the same area as the existing facility, says Scheller. Options for the project also include lighting and the possible inclusion of a “coaching lane” in the center of the courts, which would offer a designated location for team benches and a space for coaches that would be away from spectators.
The estimated cost could be between $530,000 and $750,000, depending upon the options selected for the final design of the project, says Scheller. Once approved by the Board, construction could begin as early as late-April if no permits are needed for the project; or in July if permits are required.
The Board is expected to continuing discussing the tennis courts project at its Regular Meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 21. For more information, visit https://4.files.edl.io/fd11/01/15/25/154908-7b890bd6-f70e-4452-afa8-5e7def9a8e9e.pdf.
