Scott Heinauer, Athletics & Activities Director, is retiring after 34 years at Mars Area School District, effective Aug. 5.
Heinauer, who holds a bachelor’s degree in social studies/history from Thiel College, joined the District in 1988 as a social studies teacher and athletics director. In 1992, he was appointed head coach of Mars Area High School Varsity Football Team.
During his tenure as head coach, Heinauer led the Fightin’ Planets to earn nine section titles with an overall record of 203-118. The team advanced to the WPIAL playoffs 19 times and twice (1996, 2002) to the WPIAL Championship final.
In 2020, Heinauer became the 33rd coach in WPIAL history to win 200 games and he currently holds the Butler County coaching record for wins.
A six-time Coach of the Year, Heinauer is a 2017 Butler County Sports Hall of Fame inductee; a 2016 Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association (PSFCA) Hall of Fame inductee; and was named 2014 Pennsylvania State Athletic Directors Association (PSADA) Pennsylvania Athletic Director of the Year.
Heinauer holds a PSADA Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) designation from and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) and he is a Registered Athletic Director in Pennsylvania. He currently serves as secretary of the WPIAL Board of Directors, for which he has also served as president and vice president.
He is a former member of the PIAA Board of Directors and PSADA Delegate Assembly. He also previously served as president of the Midwestern Athletic Association (MAC) Athletic Directors Association; on the District 7 Committee for Coed Track & Field and Cross Country; and as meet director for Mars Area School District’s Track & Field Invitationals.
