The Pennsylvania Department of Education approved Mars Area School District’s application to use five (5) Flexible Instruction Days (FIDs) per school year.
FIDs will be used in place of a school day that has been cancelled because of inclement weather or another emergency situations. On a FID, students will complete learning activities and assignments provided by the teacher at home on the day that otherwise would have been cancelled. Students will receive learning activities and assignments for each subject that would have originally taken place during a regular school day.
Students and parents will be notified of a FID through the District’s mass notification system in the same way that school closings and delays are announced. Notifications will be distributed via phone and e-mail and will be posted on the District’s website, www.marsk12.org.
“This is new for everybody. We are excited about the opportunity to do it; but, we want to roll it out with lots of information,” said Dr. Wesley Shipley, superintendent. “We are going to be working with our teachers over some In-Service time to have lessons prepared.”
Teachers will design learning activities and assignments to be equivalent in time to a regularly scheduled class period and will attempt to assign an approximate time to each activity or assignment. Teachers will post the FID lessons and assignments to their individual Schoology pages and will be available to answer questions via e-mail and Schoology during the school day.
All students will be expected to complete lessons for all classes that are typically scheduled for that day to include special area classes such as health, art, music, library, etc. Any students with IEPs will receive modified or adapted assignments.
Teachers will provide paper copies of all lessons and assignments to any students who do not have access to the Internet either prior to the FID on the next regular school day. If a student cannot access the Internet or the paper copies of the learning activities, he/she will have five (5) school days to complete the assignments.
Any student who fails to complete their FID assignment within five (5) school days will receive a zero grade and will be marked as absent.
In addition, Mars Area School Board approved a revision to the 2019-2020 School Calendar to accommodate Flexible Instruction Days.
The calendar keeps Thursday, June 11, as a Snow Day Make-up Day (with one Snow Day). The next five (5) Snow Days will be Flexible Instruction Days (FIDs) and a seventh Snow Day would be made up on Friday, June 12.
The revised calendar also changes Monday, April 13, from a Snow Make-up Day to a Vacation Day, extending Spring Break to a four-day weekend. The revised 2019-2020 Mars Area School District Calendar is below.
More information about Mars Area School District's Flexible Instruction Days will be provided to students and parents in the coming weeks. For general information about FIDs, visit www.education.pa.gov/Teachers%20-%20Administrators/School%20Services/Pages/FID.aspx.
