Students at Mars Area School District’s three elementary schools raised a combined $16,987 to benefit the American Heart Association as part of a “Hearts for Heroes” fundraiser, held in February.
Mars Area Primary Center (K-1) raised $3,807; Mars Area Elementary School (2-4), $12,935, and Mars Area Centennial School (5-6), $245 for the cause. (Note: Mars Area Centennial School is continuing to collect donations online at http://www2.heart.org/site/TR?pg=company&fr_id=4081&company_id=196364 through Friday, March 29.) In addition to collecting donations for the cause, students joined in a variety of heart healthy fitness activities throughout the month.
In their physical education classes, fifth and sixth-graders jumped rope and joined in basketball shoot-out games. Students in second through fourth grades learned to play hockey while discussing topics such as healthy eating, proper exercise and the dangers of drugs & alcohol.
During the first week of March, parents of first-graders were invited to jump rope with students in their physical education classes. Parents were asked to donate $5 to participate and all proceeds benefited the American Heart Association.
