School Reopening Health & Safety Plan

On Aug. 11, Mars Area School Board voted 8-0 in favor of Mars Area School District's 2020-2021 School Reopening Health & Safety Plan. (Board member Gordon Marbuger was absent.)

As per the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Mars Area School District developed the Health & Safety Plan to serve as the local guidelines for all instructional and non-instructional school reopening activities. As with all emergency plans, the Health & Safety Plan is tailored to the unique needs of our school community. In the development of the plan, the District considered input from various stakeholder groups across the District as well as guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH), American Academy of Pediatrics (APP), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Given the dynamic nature of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Mars Area School District Health & Safety Plan is designed to outline teaching and learning modalities that allow flexibility for our students and their families during what may be ever changing conditions. It is the District’s most sincere hope to ensure that all stakeholders are fully informed and prepared for a local phased reopening of our school facilities.

Mars Area School District will continue to monitor and update, as needed, its Health and Safety Plan throughout the 2020-2021 School Year. All revisions will be reviewed and approved by the School Board.

Decision-Making Tool for Parents/Guardians

Mars Area School District understands that some parents/guardians may choose alternate arrangements to the District's three (3) instructional options — Traditional (face-to-face) Instruction, Live Stream Interactive (LSI), or Mars Area Cyber Academy — such as homeschooling or enrollment in an approved private, cyber or charter school. The District wants parents/guardians to make a decision that best suits the needs of their child and family. To aid parents/guardians in making a decision, the District has published a Decision-Making Tool for Parents/Guardians. To access this tool, click on the appropriate link in the right-hand column of this page.

Typical Classroom

In addition, to aid in the decision-making process, the District has posted pictures of a typical classroom in each of our schools. (Please note that the classrooms in each building may vary in size and shape. Actual social distancing in each classroom will be determined by the number of students who opt for Live Stream Interactive.) Cyber Option

Mars Area School District respects that, regardless of the health and safety measures that are implemented by the District, some parents might still have reservations about their students returning to face-to-face instruction. For those parents who are concerned about sending their children back to school, the District is offering students the option of enrolling in Mars Area Cyber Academy.
